Project Overview:

For this project, I created a 3D model of a skateboard with the goal of producing renders that evoke a certain emotion. The project was focused on both technical and creative development. Throughout the process, I explored various software to achieve a convincing final result.

Workflow and Tools:

  • Blender: I used Blender to model the base shape of the skateboard. Here, I created the lowpoly mesh, which later served as the foundation for texturing and rendering.

  • ZBrush: This was my first time working with ZBrush. I sculpted a highpoly version of the skateboard, adding extra detail and form. This highpoly version was used for the baking process.

  • Substance Painter: The highpoly was baked onto the lowpoly mesh in Substance Painter. I then created the textures, including wear and tear, scratches, stickers, and other details that gave the skateboard character.

  • Unreal Engine 5: For rendering, I chose Unreal Engine 5 to take advantage of real-time lighting and cinematic effects. This was also my first time using Unreal Engine 5, which allowed me to explore its powerful rendering capabilities and achieve a high-quality, dynamic result.

Render 1 – Freedom:

In this render, I aimed to convey the feeling of freedom often associated with skateboarding. I placed multiple skateboards on a skate park, with them soaring through the air – a moment of weightlessness and motion. The composition and lighting were chosen to evoke a dynamic, airy feeling.

Render 2 – Skate Culture & Rebellion:

This render was inspired by skate culture and the rebellious energy often tied to it. The image shows a narrow alley where skateboards are attempting to escape from the police, but get trapped due to the limited space. This scene symbolizes the tension between freedom and limitation, and serves as a nod to the underground culture of skateboarding.

This project was not only a technical challenge but also an opportunity to strengthen my artistic vision. I learned a great deal about sculpting, texturing, and working with different programs in a cohesive pipeline. Experimenting with storytelling through renders was a valuable experience that I will certainly carry forward into future projects.
